Who Gets the Best Results from Dermaplaning

We've found the biggest success stories with dermaplaning have come from people who have been frustrated with the results of dry, rough skin for a long time. They've tried every scrub, every serum. But it seems nothing has worked to break through the surface of dead skin and debris. Dermaplaning usually changes the results for them in just one visit.

However, different skin types are going to produce different results. This group of people typically does best with the treatment:

Dermaplaning is perfect for the majority of skin types, but our esthetician must check your skin before getting started. This is a step that cannot be skipped. If someone schedules a dermaplaning appointment and we notice inflamed acne or other issues during an exam, we might suggest something else entirely. In fact, we've actually seen clients book dermaplaning and walk out with our Custom Facial instead. This is because a client's skin was in need of that particular treatment that day. The point being: there's no reason why you have to settle on the one you initially signed up for. Those who experience the least results are typically the individuals who have coarse facial hair or cystic acne. Dermaplaning isn't the right treatment for either condition. If you're a good fit for the treatment, you should notice the difference the moment you look in the mirror and touch your skin afterward.

Is It True Vellus Hair Will Grow Back?

Clients from Prosper will ask, "won't my hair grow back thick?!" That's our number one concern, especially among those who have yet to book their first dermaplaning treatment.. No one wants to give up their smooth, clear skin now to be stuck with rough, prickly skin later on.

The truth of the matter, though, is that peach fuzz stays peach fuzz. That is the peach fuzz on our face. Dermaplaning will only remove the hair on the surface of the skin, not the hair follicle. In a study on dermaplaning, the American Academy of Dermatology concluded that shaving "does not affect hair color or thickness or rate of growth." Dermaplaning is simply using a blade on top of the skin, so it's no wonder it's unable to produce the same results.

So why does the myth of dermaplaning and regrowth persist? It's because of the sensation when the hair starts to return. Since the end of the hair will not be tapered, the newly sprouted hair may feel different against your finger tips. But it will not be any darker, thicker or coarser than your natural hair. It really is all the same hair. It's simply that you're more aware of it now because you're paying closer attention.

Here's what we say to our near Windsong Ranch and Prosper clients who come in worried about this. After your first treatment, notice over the next two to three weeks:

• Hair growing back at its typical rate
• It still growing in the way it always has, fine and soft
• Your skin still feeling smoother than pre-treatment skin
• Makeup still being a little easier to apply, as you continue to shed hair

People who are apprehensive before the first dermaplaning treatment are booking their second treatment within a month, after seeing such a visible difference in their complexion.

How to Care for Your Skin in the Days Immediately Following Dermaplaning

You have just left our Prosper location with your best skin in years. Now what? The 48-72 hours following dermaplaning are critical. It goes without saying that you've just had the topmost layer of dead skin cells on your face removed. That was the intention! It also means you need to take even greater care to prevent irritation from occurring for at least a few days. We do walk through each and every client's at-home skincare routine before she goes, but here's the breakdown:

The first 24 hours

1. Avoid wearing makeup or if you need it, use mineral products only. Let your skin breathe for at least a day so the fresh cells can regenerate without interference.
2. Avoid direct sun exposure. Your skin is fresh and raw. If you must go outside, make sure that you use at least an SPF 30 sunscreen.
3. Don't touch your skin. Keep your hands off. This one is the one that seems to confuse our clients the most.
4. Use warm, not hot water, to wash your face. This seems self-explanatory, but we have to say it.
5. Avoid products containing active ingredients (e.g., retinol, glycolic acid, Vitamin C serum) for at least 48 hours.

When we hear our clients describe a "burn" or "sensitive" feeling after she has had her dermaplaning done, that is generally due to reapplying their full skincare routine too soon. You'll notice, too, that all your products absorb much more easily and effectively right now because they are going straight to the healthy cells. Which is good. But putting your strong actives on top of freshly-exfoliated skin will only end up in unnecessary redness and irritation.

Something else that most people don't realize is that your results actually continue to improve over the next few days. As the skin starts to settle and the pores are unclogged, you'll find that your makeup applies beautifully, even more than immediately after the procedure. And your serums and creams are more effective in penetrating your fresh skin. That same "glow" continues to increase, even after the procedure is over.

A wide-brim hat is the best way to protect your face if you're out and about after your dermaplaning appointment. Our esthetician will discuss which products you should use post-procedure and whether any of them will interfere with the results we want to achieve. You don't have to purchase them from us; we'd rather you use the right product wherever you can find it rather than use the wrong product at all. It is just the way we do things.
