What dermaplaning actually does to your skin at 360 IV Infusion and Wellness in Prosper TX

What Dermaplaning Actually Does to Your Skin

Ever wake up and your skin feels lifeless, or rough? Your makeup won't seem to sit on the skin at all and your moisturizers just won't penetrate. The problem usually consists of a layer of dead skin and fine hairs on the surface.

Dermaplaning removes both at once. Our expert esthetician holds a blade of surgical-grade steel against the skin in just the right direction, and gently removes that layer of dead cells and peach fuzz which collects dirt, oil, and other debris on the skin surface. This is a manual service; we don't use suction, chemicals or mechanical devices for this treatment.

The benefits:

  • You will be able to immediately feel a smoother surface with your hands.
  • Your products will penetrate deeper into your epidermis so that your serums, creams and lotions have an impact.
  • Your face will look brighter and have an even color instead of the gray look caused by the accumulation of dead skin.
  • Your foundation and makeup will look cleaner and more flawless for a longer period of time.

It's common for clients to come into our office frustrated with their skincare products because they aren't having any effect. They're not a bad product. The issue is they cannot penetrate the accumulation of skin cells and debris sitting on the top layer of the skin.

No, the hair will not grow back thicker. Vellus hair (the peach fuzz type on your face) is different from the darker, thicker type called terminal hair. Using a blade on the skin will not change the hair follicle. The American Academy of Dermatology has stated that shaving or dermaplaning vellus hair does not result in any changes in color, thickness or growth rate.

Dermaplaning is safe enough for nearly all skin types. The esthetician will always assess the skin before performing the procedure. Sometimes a client will come in wanting dermaplaning and our expert will suggest either Diamond Microdermabrasion or Custom Facial treatment as better options, depending on the client's skin and needs. We're here to help clients reach their skincare goals; we're not going to just perform whatever service they've requested.

It's the difference between a simple shaving treatment and a skin assessment.

Who Gets the Best Results from Dermaplaning

We've found the biggest success stories with dermaplaning have come from people who have been frustrated with the results of dry, rough skin for a long time. They've tried every scrub, every serum. But it seems nothing has worked to break through the surface of dead skin and debris. Dermaplaning usually changes the results for them in just one visit.

However, different skin types are going to produce different results. This group of people typically does best with the treatment:

  • People with dry or flaky skin that keeps make-up looking cakey.
  • Anyone who struggles to remove the fine hair that collects dirt, make-up and skincare products on the surface of the skin.
  • Clients in their 30s and 40s are realizing that their skincare isn't absorbing the way it used to
  • Those preparing for a big event who need a quick solution to help them look their best without any recovery time.

And this happens more often than you'd think. The client from the nearby Windsong Ranch area walks in to report that her foundation just doesn't apply right in her afternoon appointments. She has tried to exfoliate at home. She has already switched up her products three times. What's the issue, you ask? It's not her current regimen, though she has tried to do so. In fact, the culprit is dead skin and tiny hairs called vellus hair. These elements make up a shield that prevents any topical serums from penetrating on their own. Dermaplaning is perfect for the majority of skin types, but our esthetician must check your skin before getting started. This is a step that cannot be skipped. If someone schedules a dermaplaning appointment and we notice inflamed acne or other issues during an exam, we might suggest something else entirely. In fact, we've actually seen clients book dermaplaning and walk out with our Custom Facial instead. This is because a client's skin was in need of that particular treatment that day. The point being: there's no reason why you have to settle on the one you initially signed up for. Those who experience the least results are typically the individuals who have coarse facial hair or cystic acne. Dermaplaning isn't the right treatment for either condition. If you're a good fit for the treatment, you should notice the difference the moment you look in the mirror and touch your skin afterward.

Is It True Vellus Hair Will Grow Back?

Clients from Prosper will ask, "won't my hair grow back thick?!" That's our number one concern, especially among those who have yet to book their first dermaplaning treatment.. No one wants to give up their smooth, clear skin now to be stuck with rough, prickly skin later on.

The truth of the matter, though, is that peach fuzz stays peach fuzz. That is the peach fuzz on our face. Dermaplaning will only remove the hair on the surface of the skin, not the hair follicle. In a study on dermaplaning, the American Academy of Dermatology concluded that shaving "does not affect hair color or thickness or rate of growth." Dermaplaning is simply using a blade on top of the skin, so it's no wonder it's unable to produce the same results.

So why does the myth of dermaplaning and regrowth persist? It's because of the sensation when the hair starts to return. Since the end of the hair will not be tapered, the newly sprouted hair may feel different against your finger tips. But it will not be any darker, thicker or coarser than your natural hair. It really is all the same hair. It's simply that you're more aware of it now because you're paying closer attention.

Here's what we say to our near Windsong Ranch and Prosper clients who come in worried about this. After your first treatment, notice over the next two to three weeks:

  • Hair growing back at its typical rate
  • It still growing in the way it always has, fine and soft
  • Your skin still feeling smoother than pre-treatment skin
  • Makeup still being a little easier to apply, as you continue to shed hair

People who are apprehensive before the first dermaplaning treatment are booking their second treatment within a month, after seeing such a visible difference in their complexion.

If thicker regrowth of the peach fuzz were ever a concern to us, it's an esthetician who would be telling you. We'd rather be the esthetician that you could trust for advice, rather than one that pushes treatments which aren't right for you, or ones which you'd later have to fix with an additional service. If we don't feel that dermaplaning is the best service for you, we'll offer a Custom Facial, Diamond Microdermabrasion, or microneedling.

What to expect on your dermaplaning treatment day at 360 IV Infusion and Wellness in Prosper TX

What to Expect on Your Dermaplaning Treatment Day

First, we talk. Before any tools touch the skin, our esthetician takes a moment to learn about your skincare and beauty concerns. Sometimes clients arrive to dermaplaning with a recommendation from a friend. Other clients arrive after reading an article online, or seeing a before-and-after on Instagram. Either way, we don't just jump into the procedure! It happens frequently that we meet with clients who have scheduled one service but may need something else. Sometimes dermaplaning is perfect. Sometimes our esthetician recommends a HydraFacial, microneedling, or Diamond Microdermabrasion instead. We're honest about that, even when it means a less expensive service for us.

But let's say it's your time to shine, and the service is dermaplaning. So here's what happens:

  1. We gently cleanse your skin to remove makeup, sunscreen and oil
  2. Our esthetician uses a sterile surgical-grade blade to hold a very specific angle to your skin and glide along the surface
  3. She'll glide across your forehead, then your cheeks, and then the jawline and chin
  4. A soothing serum and/or moisturizer will be applied after to keep your delicate skin looking fresh
  5. We'll also discuss the simple aftercare steps you should be taking at home after your appointment

So how long does the whole treatment take? About 30 minutes. We use no needles at all. There is no downtime, and you can immediately return to your day, whether it's picking up the kids from school near Windsong Ranch or hitting up the shopping center off of Prosper Trail.

And here's something that will surprise many people: The treatment itself isn't uncomfortable. Clients tell us it just feels like a light brush against the skin. Some actually close their eyes and relax through the whole appointment. And with our private treatment rooms instead of the crowded, fast-moving treatment rooms of most major med spas, you won't be rushed through your appointment. This is standard practice for every single client; it isn't even a membership status. It's just how we operate. The skin immediately appears smoother once the client stands, and there is a visible increase in radiance. After that, any makeup you choose to apply feels and acts as smooth as butter, and that's the most frequent comment made by our clients in Prosper.

How to Care for Your Skin in the Days Immediately Following Dermaplaning

You have just left our Prosper location with your best skin in years. Now what? The 48-72 hours following dermaplaning are critical. It goes without saying that you've just had the topmost layer of dead skin cells on your face removed. That was the intention! It also means you need to take even greater care to prevent irritation from occurring for at least a few days. We do walk through each and every client's at-home skincare routine before she goes, but here's the breakdown:

The first 24 hours

  1. Avoid wearing makeup or if you need it, use mineral products only. Let your skin breathe for at least a day so the fresh cells can regenerate without interference.
  2. Avoid direct sun exposure. Your skin is fresh and raw. If you must go outside, make sure that you use at least an SPF 30 sunscreen.
  3. Don't touch your skin. Keep your hands off. This one is the one that seems to confuse our clients the most.
  4. Use warm, not hot water, to wash your face. This seems self-explanatory, but we have to say it.
  5. Avoid products containing active ingredients (e.g., retinol, glycolic acid, Vitamin C serum) for at least 48 hours.

When we hear our clients describe a "burn" or "sensitive" feeling after she has had her dermaplaning done, that is generally due to reapplying their full skincare routine too soon. You'll notice, too, that all your products absorb much more easily and effectively right now because they are going straight to the healthy cells. Which is good. But putting your strong actives on top of freshly-exfoliated skin will only end up in unnecessary redness and irritation.

Something else that most people don't realize is that your results actually continue to improve over the next few days. As the skin starts to settle and the pores are unclogged, you'll find that your makeup applies beautifully, even more than immediately after the procedure. And your serums and creams are more effective in penetrating your fresh skin. That same "glow" continues to increase, even after the procedure is over.

We also make sure that our clients on Prosper Trail and throughout Windsong Ranch remember to protect their skin from the Texas sun, especially in the summer. A wide-brim hat is the best way to protect your face if you're out and about after your dermaplaning appointment. Our esthetician will discuss which products you should use post-procedure and whether any of them will interfere with the results we want to achieve. You don't have to purchase them from us; we'd rather you use the right product wherever you can find it rather than use the wrong product at all. It is just the way we do things.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about dermaplaning services in Prosper

Will my peach fuzz grow back thicker after dermaplaning in Prosper?

No, your vellus hair will not grow back thicker, darker, or coarser after dermaplaning. The blade only removes hair at the surface — it never touches the follicle. The American Academy of Dermatology confirms that shaving vellus hair does not change its color, thickness, or growth rate. You may notice a slightly different texture as it grows back because the ends are no longer tapered, but that feeling is temporary. Your hair stays exactly the same.

How do I know if dermaplaning is right for my skin type?

Most skin types do well with dermaplaning, but your esthetician will always check your skin before starting. If you have dry or flaky skin, makeup that looks cakey, or products that just won't absorb, you're likely a great candidate. However, if you have active inflamed acne or cystic breakouts, we may suggest a Custom Facial instead. Here in Prosper, we see clients book dermaplaning and leave with a different treatment because their skin needed something else that day — and that's perfectly fine.

Why aren't my skincare products working even though I use them every day?

Dead skin cells and fine vellus hairs create a barrier that blocks your serums and moisturizers from absorbing properly. This is one of the most common frustrations we hear from clients in Prosper. Your products aren't the problem — the buildup on the surface is. After one dermaplaning session, most clients notice their serums and creams absorb noticeably better. Products that felt useless before suddenly start doing their job.

Is there any downtime after a dermaplaning treatment?

There is zero downtime after dermaplaning. You can go right back to your normal day after your appointment. Many clients in the Windsong Ranch area come in during a lunch break and head straight back to work. Your skin may look slightly pink for an hour or two, but there's no peeling, swelling, or recovery period. It's one of the reasons dermaplaning is so popular for people preparing for a big event and needing fast results.

What will my skin feel like right after the treatment?

You'll feel the difference the moment the treatment is done. Your skin will feel noticeably smoother when you touch it — almost like glass. The dull, gray look caused by dead skin buildup will be gone, and your complexion will look brighter right away. Your makeup will also apply more evenly and last longer. Most clients are surprised by how immediate the results are after just one visit at our Prosper studio.

How is dermaplaning different from microdermabrasion?

Dermaplaning uses a surgical-grade blade to manually remove dead skin and vellus hair in one pass — no suction, no chemicals, no mechanical devices. Microdermabrasion uses a diamond-tip tool with suction to resurface the skin. Both treat dead skin buildup, but dermaplaning also removes peach fuzz, which microdermabrasion does not. Our esthetician in Prosper will assess your skin and recommend whichever treatment fits your specific needs that day — sometimes that means switching from one to the other.
